Sheung Wan · since 2013
We are a small twelve-seat tea house on Tai Ping Shan Street. We source single-origin oolong, roasted Wuyi rock teas and hand-pressed pu'er directly from growers, and brew them gongfu-style at the counter so you can taste each infusion as it changes.
Our Story
Oolong & Co. opened in the spring of 2013 in a narrow shophouse on Tai Ping Shan Street, a few doors up from the old Hollywood Road antique dealers. Mei-ling Chow had spent nine years buying leaf for a wholesaler in Sham Shui Po, and wanted a room where people could sit down, slow down, and actually taste what was in the cup rather than grab it to go.
The shop is small on purpose. There are twelve seats: a long timber counter where we brew gongfu-style in front of you, and two low tables by the window for anyone who wants to linger over a whole afternoon. We roast a handful of our oolongs in-house in small batches, and we keep a cabinet of aged pu'er cakes that we open, weigh and press to order.
We are not a chain and we do not franchise. Twice a year the counter closes for a week while Mei-ling and Anson travel to the growing regions, mostly Nantou and northern Fujian, to taste the new harvest and carry back what we like. Everything on the list is here because someone on the bench drank it and wanted you to try it too.
No middle warehouse. We taste, weigh and negotiate on the mountain, then ship in small lots so the leaf stays fresh through the Hong Kong summer.
Our Dong Ding and Tie Guan Yin are finished over low charcoal heat in the shop, a few kilos at a time, so the roast matches the season.
Sit at the counter and we will run the whole gongfu session with you, pouring each infusion and talking through how the tea moves as it opens.
Everything we pour is sold loose by the tael. We label the origin, the harvest and a suggested steeping so you can get it right in your own pot.
How a counter session works
A gongfu session is not one big cup. It is many small ones from the same leaf, each a little different. Here is how an hour at the counter usually goes.
Step one
Tell us what you drank last and how you felt about it. We will pull two or three tins off the cabinet and let you smell the dry leaf before you choose.
Step two
The first rinse wakes the leaf. From there we pour short infusions into small cups so you catch the tea changing across the session.
Step three
A good oolong will keep going for eight infusions. When it fades, we will suggest the next one, or wrap your leaf to take home.
The Bench
A small crew. Between us we have poured a lot of tea, and we would rather talk about it than rush you out.

Head of the Counter
Runs the gongfu sessions and keeps the pu'er cabinet in order. Ask him about water temperature and he will happily lose an afternoon.
Tea & Retail
Weighs the take-home leaf, builds the gift boxes and writes the little steeping cards. She keeps the cold brew stocked in summer.
Roasting
Looks after the charcoal roaster two mornings a week. Has been finishing oolong by hand for longer than the shop has existed.
In the guestbook
Ended up staying nearly two hours over one pot of Rou Gui. Anson kept refilling and explaining without ever making me feel rushed. This is how tea is meant to be drunk.
I bought the pre-Qingming Longjing here on Priscilla's suggestion and it was the best green tea I have had in years. The steeping card meant I could actually get it right at home.
Tiny place, so go early or expect to wait for a counter seat. Worth it though. The aged shou pu'er after lunch was exactly what I wanted. Cash and card both fine.
Visit & Reserve
We are up the hill from Hollywood Road, on the quiet stretch between Pound Lane and Upper Station Street. Closest exit is Sheung Wan MTR, Exit A2, then a short climb.
